Innovations such as precision agriculture, variable-rate technology and real-time weather information gathering aid in the efficient use of resources to grow more crop with fewer inputs.
We participate in the Alberta Environmental Farm Plan Program. The Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) is a voluntary, whole farm, self-assessment tool that helps producers identify their environmental risks and develop plans to mitigate identified risks. Read more… Our Commitment / Environment
We understand that water is a precious resource, and have worked with software developers to create and implement crop water-use models that eliminate over-watering. We have personnel dedicated to ensuring we get the maximum benefit from the water we use.
Leading-edge technologies such as GPS enable VRP to manage logistics of its large machinery fleet and irrigation equipment. This informs better decision-making on how to best direct resources. Additional equipment monitoring information from sprayers, tractor and seeders is combined with land information and crop health information.
Our cattle produce manure, which supplies the nutrients to feed the crops and our land. As a result, VRP has a very small requirement to buy commercial fertilizer.
The majority of our land is strategically situated in close proximity to the feedlots, reducing the hauling distances, which lessens the impact on roads, equipment, and fuel consumption.
VRP works closely with local seed producers and certified suppliers to provide high quality seed and inputs for our production.
Our shop located at the Homelot near Iron Springs is the hub of all farm activity. Our mechanics, welders and shop crew work diligently throughout the year to maintain our machinery, equipment, feed mills and buildings. We have trained and qualified staff that are able to perform the majority of repairs and maintenance in house, reducing the need to outsource the work.
